Shooting Picture.
The Macdonald Brothers.
A pair of engravings depicting the future Sir Alexander Macdonald holding a long nosed golf club and his brother Sir James is shown with his gun, born 1745 and 1742 respectively. The original paintings are in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh. The two boys were the sons of Sir Alexander Macdonald of Macdonald, a great Highland chieftain with estates on the Isle of Skye. The children can be seen wearing three different patterns of tartan between them, as individual family or clan patterns did not become widely established until the end of the eighteenth century.
