VINTAGE SPELTER CRICKET FIGURE.
A fine spelter figure of G.L.Jessop also known as \'THE CROUCHER\'. The batsman is mounted on a round marble base with a removable brass tray.
Spelter is a white metal alloy and is cast using the lost wax process.
Gilbert Laird Jessop (1874 – 1955) was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and was nicknamed the ‘CROUCHER’ for his odd stance whilst in bat. The major teams for which he turned out for were; England, Cambridge University, Gloucestershire and London County. Jessop was one of the most exciting players of his time and was a good fast bowler, an accomplished cover fielder, but was renowned for his thrilling batsmanship. At the age of 20 he debuted for Gloucestershire and he later eventually followed W.G.Grace as captain and later still club secretary.
