Lemuel Francis Abbott was one of the earliest golf portrait painters and his best know picture is the 'The Blackheath Golfer'. His other golf work was of Henry Callender, also a Blackheath captain ( 1790, 1801 and 1807). Abbott was a distinguished portrait painter and painted portraits of many figures of the day including Admiral Nelson. He was born in Leicestershire in 1760, the son of a clergyman. Although he exhibited at the Royal Academy, he never became an Academician.
